Stoma is made by Odol, which is part of the GlaxoSmithKline Consumer Healthcare group. (I featured another Odol toothpaste back in 2009.)

The chief active ingredient is tea tree oil, aka Melaleuca, which has many many claimed health benefits. It also contains bromochlorophene, which has been proven to reduce plaque and gingivitis. Another ingredient is Agrimonia euphoria, which has been stated to have medical and magical properties since the time of Pliny the elder (23 AD).

Stoma, in Koine Greek means "mouth." In English it can refer to something related to colostomies - I didn't want to give much research in that direction!

Odol decided to color the paste a light green, with just a hint of blue. The flavor is medicinal and slightly in the realm of mentholatum.

My sister Amy bought it for me. (Thanks!) Sadly, unless you live near the Czech Republic, I don't think you can get your hands on any.

Whitemen

This is another toothpaste that might not make it in North America. "Whitemen" refers to how your teeth are little white men inside your head - or not. According to The Shanghaiist: 'The Chinese name of Whitemen Toothpaste is 白人牙膏 (bái rén yá gāo or "white people toothpaste").'

You might remember I shared a similar paste, Darlie. The actual pastes are quite similar: white, mint, chalky and basic.

The box has an ingredients list in English. One of the components listed is "adhesive."

I always thought I was geographically literate... little did I know, but the hot pepper shape is actually the shape of the island of Taiwan, its country of origin. Special thanks to my friend Beth, who visited there in the summer of 2011. (Inset on the photo is from the box.)

Special thanks to Marti for bringing it to me all the way from Siberia. Yes, that Siberia. It was manufactured in Moscow, but her trip was very far from the big city.

It is definitely from the realm of health products, judging by the packaging, which extolled the virtues of the product. They touted "NO Flouride." Standard toothpastes tend to be proud of having it.

Sadly, the entire package is completely in Cyrillic script, and I cannot read Russian, but I was able to decipher some of the information - the product's periodic elements were featured! My high school chemistry memories came back.

The color is light coral; the red pepper's color shows, ever so slightly. The flavor is a refreshing peppery-mint. The pepper came on more as an after-taste, rather than during the brushing.

And I was amused to note that the tube contained 74 grams of paste. Why not 75? Maybe in Russian culture, 75 is an unlucky number.

Lush Dental

This is a really unique dental product. Lush Cosmetics, an international company, has "Toothy Tabs," which are little pellets you put in your mouth, chew up, and create your own toothpaste as you brush!

My sister who lives in Belgium bought me two packages in Stuttgart, Germany. As I was researching Lush, I realized they have a store I have been in - Boulder, Colorado.

The two flavors I have are Ultrablast and Sparkle. They are kind of named backwards - Sparkle has a very strong clove flavor, though the site says it has vanilla and black pepper(!). Ultrablast is hard to describe, but the website says it has intense minty freshness, and it's much milder than Sparkle. On the English site, five flavors are listed, and only one on the American site.

Both provide an unusual brushing experience. I would recommend chewing well, as otherwise some little bits won't be used effectively in the cleaning process.

Interestingly, the packaging is all in German for the boxes I have. The shopping bag is all in English. I couldn't figure out where the company is based (though the boxes say Poole, England). It's a lot more environmental than a traditional tube. The cardboard box is certainly easier for waste processors to recycle.

Finally, as you would guess, there is no flouride.

Jaris, Malaysia

This lovely paste came from Malaysia. I bought it in a supermarket in the biggest city, Kuala Lumpur.

It reminds me of an Arm & Hammer Baking Soda mint toothpaste I had more than ten years ago; it's minty and yet has a strong salt aftertaste. However, it leaves my mouth feeling very clean.

Color? Standard white. And it's a little thicker than the average American paste.

From their website: "Jaris an oral care range for the modern Muslim which uses ingredients from the Prophet’s era." So yes, it's halal, the Muslim equivalent of the Jewish "kosher."

If you can find it in your neighborhood, buy a tube. It might be a refreshing change from what you're using now.

By the way, I was amused that the tube says, "Deep Sea Salt" and the box says, "Dead Sea Salt."

Yunnan Biayo

As some of you know, I took a trip in October 2010 to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. I stopped in Hong Kong on my journey - in both directions. On the way there, my layover was fairly short, so I had time to do not much more than a little shopping and grabbing a cup of Starbucks. My shopping included - of course - toothpaste.

Yunnan Baiyo is a herb used to stop bleeding. It also is a brand of Chinese health products. I had no idea of the anti-bleeding properties when I bought the toothpaste. And I must say that I have had no bleeding since I started using it. (Smile.)

Anyhow, it's a basic white paste with a mild minty flavor. I like it.

If you click on the image, you can see a few interesting uses of English on the instructional sheet that came in the box.

Amazon sells it, but I'm not sure if what they sell is the same paste. It was made in Egypt for the African marketplace. You won't find it in North America or Europe! It says on the tube, "Limited Edition" - so my guess is that it did not survive as a long-term flavor.

Another sales point is that it is labeled "Flavalicious". There is a tension - if it tastes too good, then kids will eat it! And not to worry - it did not taste too good. (But then, I'm not a kid.)

There is a small hint of mint. The paste is very light brownish white. India is the country of origin - though it came to me via my sister's visit to England and then her return to Belgium (where she lives)... thank you Amy!

As you can see, it's powder. The bright container has a sufficient quantity to last several years, I'd suppose. The flavor is unique enough that I can't use it for my everyday paste. (Also, I like to use a fluoride paste somewhere around half of the time, and Vicco has none.)

What is the flavor like? It's very hard to describe. If I were a wine snob, I'd have the right terms to use, but I kind of like to avoid that territory. It has herbal notes - or entire stanzas. There are hints of licorice. Not a trace of sweetness is to be found. (I doubt if any kids would enjoy it.)

Ingredients include bengal madder (which sounds like a snake to me), common jujube (as opposed to the uncommon jujube), bishop's weed and sarsaparilla (which I grew up wrongly saying, "sarsasparilla" - it's the basis for a root-beer-like drink).

Strangely, it leaves my white sink slightly brown, after brushing - and yet no brown on my teeth or tongue.

If you visit Vicco's website, you'll see the paste they offer is not powder but a more traditional tube. I'm thankful to have received the more unusual powder!

Herbal from Thailand

A really fun paste! You can tell from the color that this is not your ordinary toothpaste - it's the color of a baby's poop after she has eaten several jars of finely ground spinach.

For those of you who don't speak Thai, it says, "Herbal, Twin Lotus".

One of my favorite things with products not normally sold in America are the translations into English. On the English side of the label it says, such lovely and helpful phrases as, "With over 10 natural herbal ingredients keeps gums and teeth healthy firmly."

Flavor? Medicinal. Astringent. Strong. Bitter. I like it! This is not my daily paste, but it makes a very nice change from the other pastes I use. Kids would probably hate it. (But then, who would want a toothpaste with sugar?!) Wikipedia says, "As with most sugar alcohols, initial consumption can result in bloating, diarrhea, and flatulence" ... a bit scary. As you know, most toothpastes aren't meant to be consumed - just spit out after use. So those problems might not affect you.

Aqua Xylitol is a basic blue gel paste. Very mild (forgettable) flavor.

A special thanks to Jason and Seana, who kindly brought me the packet from their recent trip to Japan. Originally, it was called "Darkie". For obvious reasons, they changed the name. "They" is Hawley & Hazel, a company that is not part of Colgate.

The Museum is privileged to host Darlie - sourced from Malaysia. (Special thanks to my friends from there who brought it over for me.)

The paste itself is very unremarkable. It's basic smooth white mint flouride. Autumn, the CEO of Organix South, sent me a tube of their TheraNeem herbal mint flavor. It is excellent!

The country of origin is India. Natural ingredients include grapeseed, licorice, fennel, clove, peppermint, spearmint - and of course neem. I love the exceptionally interesting mix of flavors - very hard to describe. This has quickly become my current favorite paste. It's the color of coffee with milk and has more texture than most pastes.

Users are supposed to make the toothpaste part of a three-step oral health regimem - the other steps being TheraNeem mouthwash and "Supercritical Extract" - an elixir the user consumes. My neem package included the mouthwash but not the extract. The mouthwash has an amazingly complex flavor - nearly impossible to describe.

I can't vouch for all the health benefits of neem - "purifying and antioxidant", but I do like the taste of Theraneem and how it makes my mouth feel clean.

Beyond the scope of The Museum are the neem soaps Autumn sent - six "flavors". They are all natural, as you might guess. All are various shades of beige (no dye!) and have intriguing aromas.

Give TheraNeem a try! It definitely has The International Toothpaste Museum Seal of Approval.

Email Toothpaste

I love this one. (It's also courtesy of my sister Amy.)

"Email Diamant" is roughly translated "diamond enamel". It's proudly French and made since 1893.

Normally this Museum does not feature boxes that pastes come in, but this time I had to show you a closeup of the bullfighter guy, since he's in full color on the box. He's a happy user of the paste!

The taste is different - with a nose of anise, to use wine terms. The paste is indeed very red - it almost stains my toothbrush.

I love the description. The translator from the original French did not have a good command of English: it "respects" the tooth enamel. And it has "natural light reflectors". (I'd recommend regular users riding their bicycles at night with their mouths wide open.)

If you're in the USA and desperately want to try some, it's a bit expensive: $19 from here. (I'd recommend instead that your sister who lives in Belgium bring you some when she visits.)

Finally, you were hoping for a joke about toothpaste relating to e-mail. Sorry to disappoint you.

Neem, 2

I've written about Neem before. But they've gone more mainstream since the first time I tried it. The tube of their new paste looks similar to the old, but the paste does live up to the "New" on the label (though funny enough, the old tube also had "New" on the label).

This time, the paste is also green, but it's a little bluer in tint than the last yellow-khaki-green. And it tastes much more like a traditional mint paste.

"Active"? I'm not sure how it makes me more active. Maybe the fresh minty flavor leaves me wanting to be more active. And I was highly amused at the lack of an expiration date - however, they had enough integrity to print "Two years" on the end of the tube. (That was the same printing as the product name.) I guess the user should discard whatever remains of the original 3 grams, if they haven't used it by the end of two years since opening the tube.

Special thanks to my buddy Shane, who made the trip to Mongolia on behalf of the International Toothpaste Museum. Why? It's halal - the Muslim equivalent of Kosher.

You see, the majority population of Malaysia is Muslims.

A friend who normally lives in the capital, Kuala Lumpur, brought over this tube as a wonderful addition to the museum. (I won't say that was his only reason for visiting Colorado!)

Review? white paste. Flavor? complex. My 13-year old son called it similar to Stride gum's sweet mint flavor. My 8-year old daughter said it was a mix between mint and bubblegum. I couldn't figure out what I thought it tastes like.

To me, the toothpaste is a winner because of the picture of the happy kids on the box.

Colgate Wisp toothbrush

This is a departure from the norm - a toothbrush review!

Colgate came out with a totally new concept, as far as I could discover... a tiny brush that has built-in paste. It's a great idea. You just pack it in your purse (ladies) or pocket (men) - and when you need more of a clean mouth than breath mints can provide, voila!

It's only about 3.5" (90 mm) long. The "paste" is contained in that little red blob you see in the middle of the brush area. It gets released when you use it. Red is cinnamon and blue is peppermint. Flavor? fine. Clean mouth? yes.

Idea: A+ Execution: C+. It fails in that it's just too short. I realized after using one that my mouth makes a seal around a brush's stem when I brush. The Wisp is too short to allow this. So I get saliva all over, unless I'm really careful.

Finally, the packaging is excessive and wasteful. I'd vote for a longer stem that has interchangeable refill heads.

Thumb-sized from Italy

This baby is "Dental Cream With Green Tea" from Italy. I like the aftertaste - it leaves my mouth feeling, as they say, extra fresh.

Of course it falls into the minty category. The paste appears very similar to Aquafresh - but its taste is nothing like that! Odol-med3 is made in Germany and may not be available elsewhere.

The glowing ice on the package might not be something you'd see in America; for some reason, ice and toothpaste are not a natural combination here. When we lived in the south of England for three years, every major grocery chain had at least one line of generic products, offering lower-priced products at often the same quality. Often there were more than one line of generics - an ultra-basic cheap line and a more deluxe line.

Tesco Value toothpaste is generically generic - at least in terms of the package. Tesco is the largest grocery chain in the UK. They have expanded to many other parts of the world, including some stores in Nevada and California ("Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Markets" - which sound like an interesting concept - mixing a grocery store, convenience store and a health food market's ready-made meals section). My guess is that the US stores do not carry this toothpaste.

Appearance: white paste. Taste? Surprisingly good! It's slightly sweet without being overly so. It contains flouride, of course. It would make a great daily-use paste.

Thank you to Ed, who lives in England. Rose and violet flavored?! That's something you are meant to smell - not taste. And it tastes like it smells. It's also a funny pink-lilac colored gel.

The packaging is completely in Italian. It was made in Italy too. "Healthy gums and strong teeth." I'm sure that is true.

According to Cool Hunting, it was supposed to be available at CVS, Walgreens and Albertson's - but none of those stores near me carry any. You can get some on eBay - lemon sage flavor. So if you're longing for rose violet, you'll need to board the next plane bound for Italia.

Finally, I must comment on the shape - it looks like a feminine product of some kind. (Since I'm not a woman, I don't know about those sorts of things.)

This entry to the museum is again courtesy of my film producer friend Tom, who very kindly delivered it after his visit to Milano. However, it's not Crest's average toothpaste. This one is "professional". (People with professional teeth are supposed to use it? Nah - I know - it's supposed to be used by dentists on your teeth, if they come to your home to brush your teeth.)

Flavor: minty with a hint of wintergreen. Color: blue gel, though less transparent than some. Texture? that's where it shines. There is just a little fine grit that leaves my mouth feeling very clean.

One negative is the lid - very hard to close. (Stick with the basic screw-on, please.)

If you can find it on special, go for it.

Sage from Italy

My buddy Tom, a film producer and director, recently visited Milano, Italy, the world capitol of design.

He was kind enough to bring me back a tube of Antica Erboristeria herbal toothpaste. This variety is "Salvia & Bicarbinato". I'm sure you can guess the Bicarbinato part - baking soda. The Salvia part, I had to look up - sage. You could probably also guess the translation of the company name: old herb emporium. Apparently the company dates back to 1783. But now it's part of the Schwarzkopf & Henkel family of fine products.

The tube is completely in Italian. But then, I'm not a "White Strips" user.

If you go to their site, they have branched out in their marketing a bit. (I bought this tube probably 6 years ago, and they have changed their packaging - if not everything.)

French Clove

This is a lovely paste. My sister who lives in Belgium gave it to me. Flavor: clove... what a pleasant contrast with the minty pastes we get here in the States!

The color is a chalky green with a slight brownish tinge to it. No artificial anything. It does actually leave my mouth feeling fresh and clean.

The main name, "dentifrice" means simply "toothpaste".

In North America, you can buy some of their pastes here. But they don't sell clove. And you'll have to pay $15 for a tube! In France? Probably just go to your local pharmacie (and pay a lot less).

Unknown Chinese

This toothpaste is packaged with completely Chinese script. It has an herbal flavor that you won't find in any mainstream paste. Neem is an herb that has purported curing properties beyond what any western doctor (or dentist) would ever tout.

The paste is green. Not a clear gel-like green but a chalky green-tea-ice-cream kind of green. (I don't know if you have ever been to a Japanese restaurant in America - but if so, that is a nice dessert to enjoy.)

This one is strange in that it turned to solid between the time I used it last (about four years ago) and now. I had some New Zealander friends bring it to me from Switzerland, while they were studying French there. (This transaction happened when we were in Kenya.) It is expensive stuff!

My love affair with Trybol began a long time ago. We were flying back from Kenya on Swissair, and they gave the passengers tiny tubes of blue Trybol toothpaste. (And I haven't been able to get that variety in at least ten years.)

Anyhow, the green tea variety provides a very unique taste. Wonderful Clean. Fresh.

You will notice the product description on the back in three languages - German, French and Italian, in that order. Can't beat that!

Locor Del Polo

This one's from Spain.

"Sabores Autenticos" is "natural flavors". The natural flavor? Cholorophyll.

Because I'm not one of those people with a super-sophisticated palate, I can't describe the taste in terms of fruits and noses. However, it is green in taste and color.

It's made by one of those multi-national corporations: Schwarzkopf & Henkel of Dusseldorf, Germany (and Barcelona). My sister Amy sent it from Belgium (where she lives) last week.

Hema is a chain of stores in Holland and Belgium. It's kind of Ikea, Target and Walgreen's - all rolled into one - only on a smaller scale. They have simple clean designs, as you can tell from this package. Cool stuff abounds in their aisles.

This paste has a mild clean minty taste. It is a store brand (generic) with ingredient translations in Dutch, French and German (in that order). Something I have never seen before is the click-on top. It only requires about half of a turn to put the lid on.

The product name wouldn't fly in America - too close to "Everclear".

If you live near a Hema...

Salz

'Contains "purified salt" to make your gums come alive.'

Reminds me of when baking soda was touted as a decent toothpaste. For those of you who need a refresher in geography, that's a small country in the Arabian Peninsula. It's very wealthy and boasts the largest man-made spiral island I know of.

Anyhow, Dabur is a brand from India. I bought it in Nairobi, Kenya, so this tube was made for Africa and the Middle East.

The other side of the tube is English.

This one's Basil flavor. Surprisingly, it does not taste like Italian food. In fact, the taste is quite refreshing. It is a chalky green, though - so I don't think it would sell very well in these old United States.

Maxam

This lovely paste comes from China. I have never seen it for sale in the USA.

This particular flavor, "Natur-Zahncreme mit Gruntee" or "Natural toothpaste made with green tea" is my favorite of all toothpastes. It has hints of anise.

Like most natural toothpastes, they avoided flouride. (I like flouride!)

On the back, the ingredients are in German, French and Italian - in that order. That's in the order of percentages of Swiss speakers. No Romanisch, which is the fourth (and smallest) official language of Switzerland. I'd wager that more people speak Turkish in Switzerland than Romanisch.

Unfortunately, the tube broke at the weld a little, so I can't keep it forever.
